Project Management Experiential Learning

Project Management Experiential Learning

The objective of the workshop is to practice, reflect and learn project management best practices through an intelligent board game: Before Mars (by Brain Games)

A fun, engaging and powerful simulation, Before Mars helps people understand how to create the perfect conditions for teamwork, good decision making and the right attitude at work. The simulation looks and feels like a futuristic board game, where teams of 4-5 people cooperate to achieve a common objective: help human kind colonize Mars.

The debrief that follows the game focuses on:

  • how decisions were made during the game (teams have to make the rights decisions in planning their projects, based on available data: time estimates, resource allocation, deadlines)
  • the criteria used to prioritize projects and allocate resources (resources are shared between teams, prioritization is essential in achieving best results)
  • the collaboration within the team and between teams (cooperation is required in order to avoid penalties and achieve the end goal).
  • how well expectations were managed and teams improve their results (the teams can learn through the iterations and perform better at playing the simulation, dealing with crisis, cooperating and task management)
